Cáritas Española: online donations and campaigns on Drupal 10

The challenge

Cáritas Española is one of the largest social organisations in Spain, and its website is both a communication channel and a source of income. A donation lost to a gateway failure is money that never reaches a social programme, and a large editorial team needs to publish campaigns, news and annual reports without asking a developer. Generic Drupal modules covered neither the donation flow nor that editorial complexity.

What we built

In 2023 we developed a set of custom modules on Drupal 10. The core is the donation system: one-off and recurring, paid through Redsys for Spanish cards and through PayPal and Stripe for international donors. Every operation is recorded before leaving for the gateway, return notifications are processed idempotently and a reconciliation job catches payments the gateway confirmed but the site never received. On that base we added campaigns and goal-based fundraising: emergency pages, counters and forms the communication team creates without code. Donor and donation data sync to Salesforce, so the fundraising team works from a single source. We completed the system with an editorial model of content types, roles and publishing workflows tailored to the organisation.

Outcome

A website that raises funds without losing operations, campaigns the team launches the same day an emergency breaks and a CRM that receives every donation with no manual work. It is our reference for how we treat payments that are not our own: record, confirm, reconcile.
