The challenge
A city’s environmental data is measured at a handful of official stations. To understand what happens on one specific street you need many cheap, well-calibrated sensors and a path for their data to reach whoever can use it.
What we built
envMatter is our own urban environmental-monitoring project. We designed the technical architecture, from sensor to data platform, and set up the partnerships with Microsoft and the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya. In the pilot, eight participants hosted twenty-five sensors spread across Barcelona that stream their readings continuously to the meteorological service.
Outcome
A working network, data already integrated into a public body, and the basis for extending the network to more neighbourhoods and more variables. For ArtBits it is the reference for how we handle IoT projects: affordable hardware, reliable time-series ingestion and integration with external systems.
